Sanssouci Palace – The Palace of “No Worries”
日曜日、ベルリンの家を出て電車で約50分。
ポツダムの丘の上に佇む「サンスーシ宮殿」を訪ねました。
1745年、プロイセン王国の
フリードリヒ2世は、
ワインベルク（ぶどうの山）の上に
夏の離宮を建てようとし、
自らの手で描いたスケッチをもとに
建築を命じたとか…
設計を担当したのは
友人の建築家クノーベルスドルフ。
しかし、政治の場としての
合理性を求める王と、
芸術的完璧さを追求する建築家との間では、
幾度も意見が衝突したといいます。
完成した宮殿は全長97メートル。
中央に楕円形の食堂、
西翼にはヴォルテールの部屋、
謁見の間、図書室、ギャラリー、
そして六段のテラスの下には
壮麗な噴水が広がる——
まさに“フリードリヒ・ロココ”
の粋を極めた庭園宮殿でした…
フリードリヒ2世は
このサンスーシで、
「王」「君主」「軍司令官」
という意識を脱ぎ捨て、
ただ一人の人間として
生きることを望みます…
この宮殿に招いたのは、
気心の知れたわずかな友人たちのみ…
女性がほとんど訪れなかったため
姉ヴィルヘルミーネは
ここを“修道院”と呼んだといいます…
夏の間はここで政務を執りながら、
哲学者ヴォルテール、
『人間機械論』のド＝ラ＝メトリ、
世界旅行家ダルジャンヌ侯、
アカデミー総裁モーペルテュイ、
そしてイギリス人カイト兄弟らと共に語らい…
しばしば音楽会が開かれ、
王は自ら作曲したフルートの曲を奏でました…
その音色は
「国王へのお世辞ではなく、
正確で喜びに満ちた演奏だった」
と記録されています…
音楽室のロココ様式の装飾は
今も当時のまま残されています…
“Sans souci”——
フランス語で「憂いのない」…
この宮殿は、戦争と政治のただ中で、
王が求めた「静けさと自由」の象徴でした。
ベルリンとポツダムに広がる
宮殿と庭園群は、
1990年に世界遺産に登録され、
“プロイセンのヴェルサイユ”
とも称されています。
秋の光の中、風が葡萄の葉を揺らし、
時がゆっくりと呼吸しているような午後…
“心が静まる場所は、誰の中にもある”
そんな声が、確かに聞こえた気がしました…

English followsOn Sunday, I took a 50-minute train from Berlin
to visit Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam —
the summer residence of King Frederick II of Prussia, built between 1745 and 1747 atop a hill of vineyards.
Frederick himself designed the initial sketch,
entrusting his friend, architect Knobelsdorff,
to bring it to life.
But the king’s wish for a functional seat of governance often clashed with the architect’s pursuit of artistic perfection.
The result was a 97-meter-long palace —
with an oval dining hall, the famous Voltaire Room, a library, gallery, and terraces cascading down to a grand fountain —
a masterpiece of Frederician Rococo.
At Sanssouci, the king set aside his roles as monarch and commander, choosing instead to live simply as a man.
He surrounded himself only with a few close companions —
thinkers, philosophers, and musicians.
His sister Wilhelmine once called this place “a monastery,” for women were rarely invited.
Among his dinner guests were Voltaire,
the materialist philosopher La Mettrie,
traveler d’Argens, astronomer Maupertuis,
and the Keith brothers from Britain.
Music filled the evenings.
Frederick played the flute — his own compositions —
with skill and joy, not mere royal courtesy.
The ornate Rococo music room where he performed still breathes his spirit today.
“Sans souci” means “without worries.”
It was here the king sought peace after war —
a space of thought, art, and quiet humanity.
Today, the palaces and gardens of Potsdam and Berlin are UNESCO World Heritage Sites,
hailed as “The Versailles of Prussia.”
As I walked through the golden gardens,
the wind whispered through the vines,
and time itself seemed to stand still.
Perhaps that is what the king longed for most — a moment where the soul could finally rest,
without worry, without weight.
